Our Projects
The Pants Project
THE PANTS PROJECT created by Kim Engstrom, Founder, Green Tara Design, originally emerged from her love of travel and fashion and was inspired by the incredibly talented hand block artists in India. What grew from there is a desire to give directly back to the artists themselves and the community at large. From there her vision grew to include a team of dedicated and talented people who strongly believe in making a difference in the world- one project at a time, one pair of wrap pants at a time .
Star Initiatives
Star Initiatives is a community-driven organization dedicated to uplifting girls in marginalized communities and informal settlements through education, life skills, and holistic support. We believe that when girls are given the right tools, knowledge, and safe environments, they can break cycles of poverty and become confident leaders in their communities.
Our work focuses on providing educational scholarships to keep girls in school, mentorship programs that offer guidance and positive role models, and dignity kits that support menstrual hygiene and personal well-being. We also deliver comprehensive menstrual health and puberty education, helping adolescent girls understand their bodies, emotions, and self-worth during a critical stage of development.
In many African cultures, discussions around menstruation, puberty, and personal development are often considered taboo. As a result, many girls grow up without accurate information or emotional support, leading to shame, confusion, and school absenteeism. Star Initiatives addresses this gap by creating safe, inclusive spaces where girls can openly ask questions, share experiences, and learn without fear of judgment.
Recognizing the importance of digital inclusion, we also provide computer literacy and coding training, equipping girls with essential digital skills for the modern world. These skills expand their educational and career opportunities and empower them to participate confidently in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Our Mission
To empower girls from marginalized communities by providing access to education, mentorship, menstrual health support, digital skills, and safe spaces for open conversation—enabling them to understand themselves, build confidence, and create better futures for themselves and their communities.
Our Vision
A society where every girl, regardless of her background or circumstances, has the opportunity to learn, be heard, and thrive; where conversations around menstruation and personal development are free from stigma; and where girls grow into empowered, educated, and digitally skilled women who lead with confidence, dignity, and purpose.
